Musicology

Musicology is an optional extra class I run for all students, which looks at music throughout history (from the Renaissance period right up to the present day), as well as including some sight singing and a regular fun "Quiz Time" with prizes.
It is especially helpful for advanced grades aurals and students who don't take GCSE music at school, but is in any case a really interesting and enlightening walk through music history for any student.
We listen to music, watch video performances and whilst learning the terms used to describe key features of the music, students are then able to describe what they hear and accurately place music in it's historical period and suggest a suitable composer.
We have much fun in "Quiz Time", with each student having their own 'buzzer' (car horn or swanny whistle!!), and there's always a cool prize to be won!

Next session: stay tuned!

We will look at American music from the 20th century (Joplin, Gershwin, Copland).
In future sessions we will look at film music (especially the music of John Williams), and then we will go back to the Renaissance period and start our journey discovering the beautiful madrigals of John Dowland.

You should aim to listen to as much music as possible (get Classic FM on in the car and see if you can identify features from the various periods!),and try to attend as many concerts as you can to experience as many different styles of music as possible. Up-coming concerts are listed below and will appear in newsletters. Students are welcome to travel with me to any events.
